For the Love of God "Pixelated Skull"

STARTER IMAGE TRANSFERRED TO
WASHED OUT PIXELATION

I'm studying 1st year design at Victoria University Wellington, during the first trimester 101 paper challenged us to work with pixelation of images and watercolor as a media. I took the diamond skull of Damien Hirst and pixelated the image into 5mm by 5mm squares to separate and decipher what color was to be brushed onto the surface. I split up into four tones lightest to darkest. I used finely cut masking tape strips evenly to achieve the clean and controlled look of the watercolor tones. It allowed me to separate each pixel nicely so it was a neat finish. Layering of the the watercolor was an necessity to achieve dramatic tonal difference which helped the pixels to stand out more against the creme colored masking tape. I choose this project as i felt it expressed my understanding and knowledge using art material and skill level with the application of using everyday items to my advantage.
